The song, 'For all that you have done I need to say, I thank you, ...' summarizes the measure of faithfulness we have enjoyed from the Lord for the past eleven years of our marriage. This day, eleven years ago, we walked to the alter of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Freetown, where we recited our wedding vows. Through the years, the Lord has been very faithful to us. He has blessed our lives as we seek to serve him and love each other. He has worked on our weaknesses, faults and limitations for his glory.

Today, as we look back where the Lord has brought us, we just need to say we thank you. We continue to ask for his grace as we walk in his footsteps. I truly appreciate you dear for your love shown to us as a family.

The academic race has started again after the official opening of the academic year. The opening lecture given by Prof Dr Nullens, rector of ETF on the topic 'May it be a bit more theological' punctuated this start. After the opening lecture, I had the opportunity of sharing fruitful discussions with some of my professors during the reception.

We spent time to pray for wisdom as both professors and students engage in studies and intellectual analysis on our 'fides quaerens intellectum'.

International Conference on Mission History

I was recently participating in an international scientific conference in Berlin, Germany on the theme: "Mission History as History of the Globalisation of Knowledge: the Transcultural Appropriation of knowledge by Christian missionaries in Africa and Asia in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries."

The main thrust of the conference was the need to ask questions about past missionary involvement in Africa and Asia and how this might have possibly impacted our perception of missionary involvement today. The conference was cross disciplinary and made a bold attempt to question some of the accepted trajectories of mission history.

What I saw most striking was the on going need to restore the role of the African and Asian agent in the transcultural appropriation and transmission of knowledge, which is usually absent from missiological historiography. It was wonderful to be a part of this scholarly and scientific conference.

Berlin was a great city to visit.

TECT Distance Education 2010

The annual Distance Education program organized by The Evangelical College of Theology in Sierra Leone has just recently ended. This year's event which ran from 2 - 14 August 2010 was held simultaneously in Bo, Makeni and Freetown (the three biggest cities in Sierra Leone). The programme brought together a total of 81 pastors, evangelists, youth workers, women's leaders for training.

There were 31 students in the Bo campus, 17 in Makeni campus and 31 in the Freetown campus. The students are mainly enrolled in the BA, Dip in Theology and Diploma in Christian Ministries program. Among these students are some who are expected to graduate in December 2010.

We are grateful to friends who partner with us as we reach out to pastors in the interior of Sierra Leone who would not have had opportunity for training in ministry. Pray also as the academic year will officially begin on 6th September. Pray that the returning students will have the enthusiasm to study. Pray for our new students that they will find God's direction and will as they train for ministry.

This week, 17 - 21 May 2010, the final year students at The Evangelical College of Theology (TECT) in Sierra Leone are taking their final year written comprehensive examination in candidacy for various degrees and diplomas in theology, development and peace & conflict studies. These students have faithfully laboured in the past two, three or four years as they prepare themselves to face this decisive event in their academic pursuits.

As we usually do in events such as these, the students are given basic tips of how to take and pass exams. They are given a course on how to face public examination that have to be externally validated by the University of Sierra Leone which offers accreditation to TECT. They are told what the rules are regarding the conduct of the examination itself. In essence, they are prepared both for the theoretical and practical aspects of the examination.

This is also what we find in Paul's address to Timothy, the young pastor who was assigned to oversee the church at Ephesus. Paul said to him ' ... study to show yourself approved. A workman who does not need to be ashamed, but rightly handles the word of truth.' 2 Timothy 2:15

Examinations provide us the opportunity to show that we have really mastered the facts in class and can use them to advance the kingdom of God. They tell us that we are accountable to the Lord for the things entrusted into our care.

Haiti's Tragedy and the God who cares!

We have all followed the harrowing details of the painful tragedy that hit Haiti on Tuesday January 12. As I listen to news reporters, my heart breaks within me, because they continue to report that gradually the sounds of cry for help produced by survivors trapped under the rubble continue to fade. Some, I presume could no longer hold it under there, so they give up.

As always, when tragedies like this one strikes, our minds wonder aloud and our faith is called into question. If, God is loving why must he allow such suffering of this nature to hit the poorest country in the western heimesphere? The questions may go on, and on, and on. We cannot possibly understand the impact of the pain whole families have to bear at the moment.

Well through it all, we can say with the Psalmist "eventhough I walk through the valley of shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." [Psalm 23:4]

We can be comforted that though we may not have answers to our questions, yet the Lord our God cares, even now. So we bring all our cares to him, for he hears, knows and feels when his people suffer.

Happy New Year & Fresh Anointing for 2010

We have spent the last 24 hours watching as the world welcomed the New Year 2010 with a display of stunning fire works, seen from Sydney to Hawai and from Oslo to Cape Town. Indeed we are truly grateful that the Lord Jesus has kept hope alive in many believers across the globe. The church I attended in Brussels reflected on the theme "My year of Double Portion, Restoration and Transformation."

The New Year has many plans in the sporting world - the Football World Cup comes to Africa for the first time; commonwealth games in India and so on. People have set out their agendas already, taking note of these events. In politics, we expect important elections for some of the world's important democracies. In commerce, we continue to expect a complete recovery from the recession that has plaged our world. The list may go on and on...

So what then do we have as the agenda for the church in 2010? First, we realize that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the Edinburgh Missionary Conference. The World Council of Churches is working of important events to mark this occasion of one century of christian missions. Second, the Loussane Committee is also planning an event in Cape Town, RSA where we shall consider the place of the church in this rapidly changing world.

I would like to suggest that amidst all of these global events, we try to spend some moments to reflect how we can move on with the call we have form our Lord Jesus Christ. I believe that every new year brings high expectations for which we need fresh anointing. Let us go forward to 2010 with the one prayer, "Lord give me fresh anointing for 2010."

Celebrating God's goodness for 10 years

The Lord's goodness and greatness continues to amaze me! Reflecting that some ten years ago, me and my loving wife (my African Queen) walked through the main door of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Freetown to declare "I will" as we pledged to live the rest of our lives together.

10 years on, we continue to live a loving family life together. We have be blessed by a son whose vitality brings new joy each new day.

All I can say is "Great is thy faithfulness Lord unto me!"

TECT Distance Education 2009

The 2009 Distance Education programme at TECT will commence on Monday 3rd August 2009 in three campuses - Bo, Makeni and Freetown. Classes will begin on Monday 3rd August 2009 and end on Friday 14th August 2009.

This programme brings together pastors and church leaders from across the many church denominations in Sierra Leone to reflect on the changing needs of church and pastoral ministry in Sierra Leone. We also spend time to listen to God speak to each one of us through our daily chapel and evening prayer sessions.

I will be responsible for the Freetown campus, where I expect to have about 40 pastors mainly supported by Dr. Paul Paquin of The Light of the World Ministry.

Please remember to pray for the transforming presence of the Holy Spirit as we study God's word and pray together through the two weeks.

DAI Visits TECT in Sierra Leone

President and CEO of DAI has concluded a visit to Sierra Leone from 1 - 4th June 2009. While in Sierra Leone Jane and Dyonah visited TECT, the National Pentecostal Mission and the Evangelical Fellowship of Sierra Leone to discuss the issue of leadership development. In one of these sessions, staff from TECT and the National Pentecostal Mission were introduced to the First series of course materials on "Servant Leadership."

The acute need for biblically trained leaders for the church who are serving in the interior of Sierra Leone was the mainthrust of our meetings. If the church of Christ is to grow in Sierra Leone, leaders need to be trained in ways that are sensitive not just to the demands of biblical holism, but also to the demands of culture in the contexts in which they minister.

A total of 21 participants attended the briefing seminar. we were very delighted that DAI's leadership could come to meet with our Principal and Bishop. We could sense a genuine desire for the development of leaders in Sierra Leone.

9th Biennial Delegates Conference

The 9th Biennial Delegates Conference of the National Pentecostal Mission in Sierra Leone will commence on Tuesday 26th May 2009 at the National Pentecostal Church Congo Cross in Freetown. The conference, which is expected to bring together 200 delegates from our 27 churches and 10 primary schools in Sierra Leone will center its discussions on the theme "The Role of The Church in Promoting Behavioral and Attitudinal change"

We shall also review progress made so far in evangelising and disciplining Sierra Leone. We shall also elect mission officers who will serve for the next two years of work. The conference is expected to end with the ordination and reception into full time ministry of five pastors.

Please spend time to pray with us as we gather to thank the Lord and ask his favor in the lives of the mission.

Accreditation of New Programs of Study at TECT

The Evangelical College of Theology in Sierra Leone continues to make a mark in education across Sierra Leone. On Tuesday 17th March 2009, the National council for Technical, Vocational and Other Academic Awards [NCTVA] in Sierra Leone has offered accreditation for programs of study leading to the award of National Diploma and Higher National Diplomas in Peace & Conflict Studies, Community Development Studies, Human Resource Management, Banking & Finance and Computer & Secretarial Studies. This means that the curriculum at TECT has been expanded to include non theological programs that are intended to contribute to national development and social and economic cohesion.

The accreditation itself was graced by the presence of the Executive Director of NCTVA Mr M A Jalloh who administered the oath to TECT Rev Abu M Conteh. The Chairman of the Board of Governors and other members of the Board were present to celebrate this momentuous occasion.

The program was moderated by the Academic Dean of TECT - Rev J Bosco Bangura and other members of staff like Vice Principal Rev Davies also offered their remarks. Students from all our campuses were in attendance.

Educational Support for School Pupils in Church

The National Pentecostal Church in Wellington, east of Freetown, where I serve as assistant Pastor has a heart to see children of destitute parents receive basic education. Committed to sharing the love of Christ with our less fortunate children whose parents are caught in the circles of poverty, my church has committed to provided these children with a subsidized scholarship scheme that will see them through their education. On sunday 7th december 2008 we distributed scholarship assistance to 76 students enrolled at various levels of education from Junior Secondary to University.

On a seperate note, the faculty of The Evangelical College of Theology where I serve converged in our home for the monthly staff fellowhsip. While praying together and fellowshiping we reflected on the christmas theme of "The Fullness of Time" Galatians 4:4.

Sierra Leone Vision Conference 2008

Sierra Leone Vission Conference 2008 has recently ended at my church, National Pentecostal Mission Sierra Leone. The conference which brought together pastors, church leaders, women and youth leaders discussed key issues of how the church can bring about wholistic community development among the poorest of the poor in the world. This conference saw seminar facilitation from Chris (Samaritan Strategy for Africa based in Ghana) and Ouatarra (national leader for MMD in Ivory Coast). The leaders were challenged to rethink ministry from the perspective of development so that the core problems of Africa can be addressed. We are grateful to have them with us as we reflect on the role of the church in bringing about wholistic development in Sierra Leone.

On Sunday, November 16 2008 I had the opportunity to present a report to the Evangelical Church in Beringen Belgium and The Christ Centered Church in Leuven Belgium. These churches are the main support base of the ministry I am coordinating in Sierra Leone. The Christ Centered Church and Primary School in Masakaray Village in the Port Loko District north of Sierra Leone was founded by Koen a Belgian national. My studies at ETF Belgium

For the past three months, I have participated in the annual doctoral colloqium at The Evangelical Theological Faculty in Leuven Belgium where I am doing a PhD in missiology. So far, the research has been very thrilling with new insights gained in my major discipline. I was also able to re-connect with friends over meals, as well as visiting friends in Germany and The Netherlands.

This self-directed study agenda is very packed. I have to study for my doctoral exam as well as prepare an academic article for presentation in the next colloqium. Over and above this, I have missed my family so dearly.

As I look forward to going back home by end of November, I am grateful to my friends who are supporting my studies and ministry in Sierra Leone. The task of nation building after years of war and mindful of the fact that Sierra Leone has been placed on bottom of the UN's Human Index Report, I continue to ask you to join us as we seek to rebuild lives through out ministry at The Evangelical College of Theology in Sierra Leone.

New Academic Year at TECT

Distance Education @ The Evangelical college of Theology - Sierra Leone

The Evangelical College of Theology in Sierra Leone has seen a rapid increase in student enrollment because of the introduction of the Distance Education program. This program caters for the needs of pastors and church workers who are involved in pastoral ministry across Sierra Leone. Because of the nature of their ministries, they cannot come to the college’s main campus at Jui outside Freetown for full time studies. The college has therefore launched three Distance Education campuses in Bo in the southern province and Makeni in the northern province of Sierra Leone and Freetown. Rev James Davies is coordinator of the Makeni Campus where 24 students are participating. Rev James Sawo-Koroma coordinates the Bo Campus where about 60 students are enrolled in various diploma and degree programs. Rev Bosco Bangura is in charge of the Freetown Campus where 33 students are enrolled in the Diploma in Christian Ministries by Extension program. The classes are expected to run from 3rd – 16th August 2008, with five new courses treated in each week of the program. Students, who successfully participate in the program of two-weeks of learning every August, will be qualified to receive the “Diploma in Christian Ministries by Extension” after two years.

The theme we reflected upon during the chapel and evening prayer services in the Freetown campus was “Christian ministry as instrument of change” Jeremiah 7:5-7. Our students were not only challenged in class, but they were also lead into a time of personal reflection and prayer that we hoped will lead to a change in the quality of ministry they are involved in their churches and ministries. Among the speakers in the chapel services were Agnes E Lamin, Musu Sawo-Koroma, Thomas A. Beckley and Martin S. Kamara.

The Freetown campus had 20 pastors who were supported by Dr. Paul Paquin, International Director of Light of the World Ministry Sierra Leone based in the US. Together with Pastor Ben Margai (National Director, Light of the World Ministry Sierra Leone) and Rev Bosco Bangura (Academic Dean of The Evangelical College of Theology), these pastors were prayerfully selected from across Bible believing churches and ministries in Freetown and the surrounding areas of Freetown. In our meetings with these pastors, the need to seek further training to ensure effectiveness of their ministries became the common theme as we discuss over breakfast, lunch and dinner. For these pastors, if the church in Sierra Leone is to make an impact and curtail the advance of the spread of Islam, proper biblical training is necessary for pastors.

On behalf of The Evangelical College of Theology (where the training of these pastors was done) and Light of the World Ministry Sierra Leone (where I serve on the Board), I will like to express our thanks to Dr. Paul for providing the resources that made the training of these pastors possible. The hearts of these men have been rekindled with an urgent desire to be “instruments of change in their ministries.”

Faculty Seminar at The Evangelical College of Theology - Sierra Leone

On January 17, 2008, I had the opportunity to organize a Faculty Seminar for 17 full time and part time lecturers at The Evangelical College of Theology in Sierra Leone. The purpose of the seminar was to refrresh ourselves with the current changes that have occured in the field of evangelical theology in the south. We also discussed at length the need for careful supervision when students in the degree programs are writing their dissertations. It was also an opportunity to plan the second semester with faculty members.

Please pray for my ministry in Sierra Leone - students will resume second semester on February 4; faculty members and their teaching; for my church ministry, and for the Lord to be glorified in all we do in this land, classified as the poorest in the world according the UN Human Index Report of 2007.

Class Presentation

On Tuesday November 13, we had a livly class presentation in one of the classes I am teaching this semester on "Interfaith & Ecumenism." The students were divided into two groups where they were each required to present and defend their position on ecumenism. Group A defended the topic "Ecumenism: the church's hope for unity" while Group B responded in the topic "Evangelical Objections to the ecumenical movement."

Half way through the class the consensus is that more study needs to be done by both evangelicals and evangelicals on the issue of ecumenism, not just in its global expression but also through its expression in Sierra Leone.

Pastoral and Teaching Ministry in Sierra Leone

Greetings from Sierra Leone.

This is a short report to let you know that after completing a ThM (in missiology and religious studies) from ETF in Belgium, I returned hom on September 24, 2007 for ministry in the world's second poorest country.

Immediately following my return, I was officially welcomed by the principal of The Evangelical College of Theology where I teach and offered the position of Academic Dean. One week later my head of church also presented me to the congregation and board of the National Pentecostal Church in Wellington Freetown, to serve as associate pastor. This assignments have already begun and it is exciting to see what the Lord is doing for His glory.

Please pray that as I take up these roles the Lord will bless his ministry for his glory and that the lives of our students as well as church members will be transformed.

Wisdom: how to find it, Proverbs 30:24-28; James 3:13-18

Introduction
From daily living to the normal business of life people have wondered about what is meant when the word wisdom is used. How do people become wise and live their lives for the glory of God? A common definition of wisdom has often been seen to be “the practical application of knowledge to daily living.”

James the elderly apostle and chairman of the Jerusalem council differentiate between two kinds of wisdom, one that comes from the earth is corrupt and self-seeking, it harbors bitterness and pleases only the sinful nature. The other comes from heaven; this wisdom is pure, peace loving, considerate, submissive and full of mercy. His injunction for his readers is for them to seek the kind of wisdom that comes from heaven (James 3:13-18).

Jesus too uses the story of two builders to enjoin believers to seek wisdom (See Matthew 7:24-29). The foolish builder suffers a heavy loss because he did not use his knowledge practically, while the wise builder who did use his knowledge was saved from destruction when conditions demanded it.

If we would like to know how to find true wisdom, I suggest us to turn to the book of Proverbs. Most times, Christian parents quote portions from this book to admonish their children in the way of discipline. Proverbs is a very important book for the Israelites. Written mainly by Solomon (the wise king) with Agur and Lemuel contributing some of the later sections, the book’s purpose is to teach people how to attain wisdom and discipline, and how to live the prudent life. It was written to help the Jews then and us today apply divine wisdom to daily life and to provide a measure of moral instruction. The main verse of the book is 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, …”

We shall look at the section of Proverbs written by Agur, where using four simple animals, we are called to exercise wisdom. Agur says, if we need wisdom we must consult the ants, coneys (also called a hyrax, or rock badger), locusts and lizards. Perhaps we might object that it seems silly to look at these members of the animal kingdom in order to acquire wisdom. If as he claims, Agur is a wise man, why not he gives us a kind of mathematical formulae or philosophical theory of how to find wisdom? I suggest that we take our time to examine each of these things suggested by the writer to see how we may acquire wisdom.

I Ants: the wisdom of preparation, v 25
Agur began his call by making clear the characteristics of ants, which includes:
- creatures of little strength, even the wind can blow them away
- they store up their food, carrying very large load that is twice their body size
- they do it in the summer, a time of relaxation, holidays and marriages
By using ants, Agur is calling our attention to the need for preparation. Preparation takes time, effort and energy; it happens in times when we are not poised to be involved in it. Yet this is wisdom at its best. Paul in Ephesians 5:15-17 gives us strategies for preparation:
- being careful how we live, not as unwise but as wise, v 15
- making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil, v 16
- not being foolish, but understanding the will of the Lord, v 17

II Coneys: the wisdom of protection, v 26
Agur then uses the example of a rabbit-like animal called Coney (biological name hyrax or rock badger). He gives us their characteristics as follows:
- they are creatures with little power, they cannot protect themselves from prey or invaders
- they live in crags (openings in rocks)
- they hardly live their homes, except to look for food
- because they are of little power, they need the protection of a rock
Like the coneys, the believer too is of little strength and power. However, we have him who is powerful and able to protect us from every attack. The hymn writer says, “On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.” Believers have Jesus as the Living stone, though rejected by men yet he provides a place of safety for all who come to him (1 Peter 2:4-8). Where is your protection? Is it on the things you own, your clan or nation? If your house is not built on Christ the solid rock, when troubles mount you will not be able to survive (Mtt 7:24).

III Locusts: the wisdom of working together, v 27
Agur then turns to locusts, animals that are known to work together. He gives their characteristics in this way:
- they have no king, no central point from which commands are given
- yet they advance in ranks
- and leave a huge destruction in their trail, especially when they invade farms
In the bible, believers are enjoined to work together. In fact, the church is described as a body with parts that work together. In John 17:20-21, Jesus in his High Priestly prayer, prayed for unity in the body of Christ, because where this occurs the world may believe. In other words, there is strength in unity. Paul picks up this issue and said that “the body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts…” (1 Cor 12:12ff). As a church we must develop the attitude of working together to pray, support, care and correct each other in the faith. This happens when we come together to worship and fellowship (Hebrews 10:25).

IV Lizards: the wisdom of fearlessness, v 28
Agur lastly refers to the lizard as a very insightful way to find wisdom. He gives these as their characteristics:
- lizards can with caught with your bare hands, like boys do
- yet they are found in kings palaces, even the most powerful
- they are truly fearless creatures
What does this mean for the believer? I suggest that it means because the one who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world (John 14:17) we can be confident in him and fearless in a world of trials.

Conclusion

Wisdom comes from the Lord. We can use the example from simple creatures like ants, coneys, locusts and lizards to make sense of our world and live for Christ in this generation. Join me as we sing “On Christ the solid rock I stand..."

Being Christian and Single

This was a session with singles at Christ Centered Church Leuven, where we reflected on what is involved in being a single and living for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Introduction
This presentation is about a very important, but yet most often confused aspect of the Christian life – that is being single and Christian. We shall do this in a dialogical way, where I pose some simple tasks and questions to each one and invite you to comment. You are also free to ask questions at any time during the presentation.

Practical Session
- How would you define the term single?

Defining singles from Matthew 19:12
- Those who are born without the physical ability to consummated a sexual marital relationship
- Those who are single through circumstances
- Those who renounce marriage for the sake of the kingdom of God

Biblical examples of singles
- Jeremiah (Jer. 16:2)
- John the Baptist
- Elijah
- The four daughters of Philip (Acts 21:8)

Questions in the minds of singles
- The kind of person the single thinks s/he is
- The kind of person the single fears s/he is
- The kind of person the single thinks others see him/her
- The kind of person the single wants to become

Identity crises in singles
- Physical changes - growth in body size, height, voice, etc
- Mental/emotional changes - need of affection
- Social changes - need for belonging to the peer group
- Spiritual changes - need to know God

Assumptions about singles
- People who are suffering from loneliness
- People who struggle with self-esteem and self-value

Examinations - How accountable are you?

As a student, one moment that is not often liked very much by students is the defining moment when each individual is evaluated by professors to see whether course objectives have been achieved. I am talking about examinations - once I was responsible to administer them; now I am responsible to sit to exams. It is interesting how the world around us is like.

I am however comforted by the fact that we find encouragement in His word. In James 1:5 we read "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." (NIV) This gives me great inspiration as I toil, knowing that my labor in the Lord is not in vain.

I will therefore do my best to present myself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed, but correctly handles the word of truth. (See 2 Timothy 2:15) We then must face our examinations with confidence in Him who calls us, as we must give account of what has been entrusted to us.

Cooking Group Leadership Handover Ceremony

On Thursday 14 June 2007, we had a simple but very unique Dutch handing over ceremony of the leadership of our cooking group. The out-going leader Moritz was also celebrating his birthday on this same day. The incoming leader Denis gave a fantastic speech, where among other things, he carefully analyzed the leadership acumen and dexterity of Moritz. He acknowledged before his colleagues that it would be difficult for him to fill the shoes of the out-going leader, because his leadership, care and concern for everyone was amazing. He however promised to work assidiously to ensure that everyone in the group has enough to eat and a place in the cooking group. Here are some of the pictures we took!!

Baptism at Christ Centered Church Leuven, Belgium

Today, June 9, 2007 we conducted a baptism for two sisters who comfessed faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and pledged to follow him for life. After the event, there was a moment of food, fun and fellowship. The Lord always adds to their number those who are being saved (Acts 2:47).

Forget not all His benefits - Psalm 103:1-5

Introduction
I have often wondered why people forget so easily. In my country we have a saying that goes thus: “as long as you eat salt and pepper you must forget.” Put in other words, to forget is human. My students at TECT in Sierra Leone often come to me after an exam to remind me that they forgot some aspect of a given question.

Recently, I decided to consult Psychology to find out why people forget. I saw a very interesting article written by TrinaLynn O. S. Tevid[1] where Trina analyzed the five main psychological theories why people forget. These are [1] Theory of Decay: sensory impressions and acquired knowledge of facts leave memory traces in the brain, which gradually fade causing loss of information. [2] Theory of Disuse: decay occurs not because of time but because of inability to associate or use the information. [3] Theory of interference: occurs when stored information is interfered with another so that we are unable to remember at one point but can at another. [4] Theory of Motivated Forgetting: associated with Sigmund Freud, this believes that people forget things because they do not want to remember them for certain reasons, eg pain. [5] Gestalt Theory of forgetting or False Memory Syndrome: occurs when memories and information are encoded with details missing the mind automatically provides that information making it whole.

What psychology knows today has already been known years before by King David, who called on his people to focus on praising the Lord and never forget his benefits. David realized that in life it is easy to complain, just about everything. In this psalm David provides us with many reasons for which we need to praise the Lord. Like the hymn writer says, “Count your blessings, name them one by one. It will surprise you to know what God has done.” We shall look at four of those areas that provide us reasons why we should praise our Lord and never forget it. In these areas, we shall also look at biblical examples of people who, even though they have a reason to praise the Lord, chose to forget all his benefits.

In this Psalm we find the following as reasons we must not forget, but rather praise the Lord our God.

1. Praise Him for His forgiveness, vv 1-3
If there is any thing that David should not forget, it must be the forgiveness of God. Upon his life, God has lavished forgiveness for which David is continually indebted to him (See Psalm 51). Having committed severe crimes, God still forgave him and restored him. In fact, David is described as “a man after God’s own heart.” Why? Because David never forgot all the benefits of the Lord upon his life.

In Matt 18:21-35 we have a parable in which an unmerciful servant forgot about the benefits of forgiveness by demanding that his colleague paid him in full his debt. He forgot the following:
- that he was also a debtor (ten thousand talents)
- that he could not pay his master his debts
- that his master ordered him, his wife and children to be sold as slaves to pay back his debts
- that he pleaded with his master for a postponement on the repayment of the debt
- that his master cancelled his debt and forgave him
- that his fellow servant had to pay him a very insignificant debt
- that he refused to forgave him, choke him and threw him in prison
- that he was re-arrested and sent into prison until he could pay back his debts
Remember, any time you refuse to forgive someone, you have forgotten what God in Christ has done for you.

2. Praise Him for His healing, v3
David knew that God is the source of healing in our lives. In Jeremiah 30:17 we read “But I will restore you to health and heal all your wounds, declares the Lord…” David has seen this both in his life and in the life of his people.

In Luke 17:11-19 we find this story of ten people who were
- Outcasts due to their leprosy
- Marginalized from society and needed to announce their coming into public so that others may not be defiled by their presence
- They came to Jesus and asked him for healing
- Jesus commanded them to go and show themselves to the high priests
- As they went on their way they realized they have been cured of their leprosy
- Only one came back to thank Jesus – he did not forget that healing flows from Jesus alone
When we are healed, we should not forget that healing flows from his throne.

3. Praise Him for His restoration, v4
David also knew that restoration comes from the Lord. In his life, he has seen the restoration of God from the lion and bear (1 Sam 17:34-35), from the uncircumcised Philistine Goliath (1 Sam 17:50); from the fierce anger of King Saul and many other enemies of Israel. So David has a reason not to forget all his benefits.

In Numbers 11 we read the exodus story of the deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt. Now they are stuck – it seems – in the wilderness and so soon they forget how God has restored them from Egypt, leading them through the Red Sea to where they are now. In this wilderness we see the Israelites
- Grumbling about their lack of fish, meat, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic vv 4-6
- They complained about the manner from heaven v 7
- Their complaining troubled Moses and the Lord became angry with them, v 10
- So God sent them quail from the sea, v 31
- But God punished their ungrateful behavior by making the quail come out of every part of their body and dying in the wilderness
Our call is to remember that God’s restoration is a reason for his praise, and not a cause to forget all his benefits.

4. Praise Him because of his satisfaction, v 5
David finally points us to the satisfaction given only by the Lord. For this reason, he enjoins all of us to praise him. In Isaiah 40:31 we are assured of the satisfaction that comes only form the Lord. When the strength of youth fails, the Lord promises to satisfy all our desires so that our youth is renewed.

In Luke 12:16-21 we find the parable of a rich fool, who even though he had a great yield of crop yet he could not taste any of it because he forgot that it is God who gives satisfaction. In the story we find that the Rich Fool did not
- Recognize God as the source of his harvest
- Remember those who worked with him in the field
- Remember that there is a future in heaven which is more important
- Estimate the fact of eternity but thought only of eating, drinking and being merry

Let us not forget that satisfaction comes only from the Lord our God. His plan is to establish us in his kingdom, thereby satisfying us with all his benefits.

Conclusion
Even though human beings have tendency to forget, yet we are called not to forget all the benefits of the Lord. David has given us four reasons why we must not forget all the benefits of the Lord. These are – forgiveness, healing, restoration and satisfaction.

The turning point to a successful Christian life is to begin to recognize how great Jesus’ forgiveness is in our lives; to realize that by his death we have been healed from our sinful state; realize that as children of God we have been restored to a right standing with him; and that in him we have all our needs satisfied.

Guarding against little foxes in Marriage - Song of Songs 2:14-15

This is a report on a Marriage & Family Seminar I coordinated at Word Communication Ministries in Brussels, Belgium. The title of my presentation is "Gurading against little foxes in marriage." The seminar took place on Sunday 27 May, 2007.

Introduction
Ever since God created marriage in the Garden of Eden, there have been small foxes that attempt to destroy this beautiful union. In Song of Songs, Solomon calls attention to this problem by using “the little foxes” whom he sees are examples of the kinds of problems that can disturb or destroy a relationship. In this passage the lovers are determined that any thing that could potentially cause problems in their relationship should be removed.

Like the call in Song of Songs, it is often the “little foxes” that cause the biggest problems in marriage. These irritations must not be minimized or ignored but must be identified so that, together, the couple can deal with them. The frequency of the appearance of little foxes in marriage is an indication that something needs to be done to restore this marriage relationship.

In this presentation, I will try to identify some of the most subtle of the “little foxes” that are little talked about, but that have slowly destroyed Christian marriages in our world today.

1. Pleasing God in our marriage
The Genesis account of creation tells us that God made marriage and sets it as a model for the creation order, where children grow in love and trust; partners satisfy each other and where moments of joy and mutual support are expressed and shared. [Gen 2:18-24; Jere 7:34; Mal 2:14-15] Beyond this however is that marriage provides an ideal opportunity for partners to please God in every aspect of their relationship. Paul says in 2 Cor 5:9 “… so we make it our goal to please Him…” The problem is, too often, partners seek to please their spouses, to do what seems good in their eyes, rather than make it their collective responsibility to please the Lord. The balance has to be shifted. Christ is the head of the husband, and the husband the head of the wife [Eph 5:22-24]. Together they both seek to please the Lord in all they do.

2. Better Sex life
Sex is a gift from God. It is intended for couples to refresh each other [Song 4:15; 5:2-8]. However, sex usually becomes the center of marital problems that we often share. When things do not go right in one area of marital life, it is quickly transferred to sex – it is either used to punish the other or bargain a better and fairer deal in marriage. This is unfortunate, because as a gift of God both parties must enjoy sex. Paul calls on believers to use responsibly sex in their marriage lives [1 Cor 7:3-5]. Apart from mutual consent, the Bible warns that we must not deprive each other sex, other wise we make room for temptation from Satan.

3. Forgiveness
The issue of forgiveness touches the very essence of our will power. However, believers must not forget that the gospel upon which we are saved in based on God’s immeasurable forgiveness on us sinners. Having forgiven our sins he calls us to do the same for others [Matt 6:14-15]. Paul picks up this issue and adds, “… It keeps no record of wrongs.” [1 Cor 13:5] To deal with the pain of hurt by pronouncing the words “I forgive you” will transform your marriage forever. It calls for selfless devotion to ones spouse and a willingness to forgive – mistakes, misunderstandings, lack of communication, etc. There is a great sigh of relief to know that one is forgiven and welcomed again in his/her family.

4. Money matters
Issues of money are often not put in proper perspective in the family. Christian families need to know that money matters are business issues. They are not to be personalized, but must be kept right. The unwise use of money and financial resources in families is a source of many problems. However, the Christian knows that life does not consist in the abundance of what one owns [Luke 12:15]. On the other hand, families where parents are not able to provide for their children are also in deep trouble [1 Timothy 5:8]. Therefore, just as we must seek to please the Lord in all areas of our life, so also we must please him in the financial resources he has given us. Families need to plan together how they want to use the money God has given them.

5. Raising up children
Children are a blessing from the Lord in marriage homes. However, where they are present this has proved to be a challenge for parents – how best to deal with them. On the other hand, where they are absent many people have had serious pains to bear with guilt and shame associated with childlessness (especially from an African perspective!). How can parents bring up their children so that their commitment to each other is not disturbed? I suggest that (a) pray over every member of your family; (b) in the case of stepparents, try never to put down a former spouse before children; (c) respect and guard parental boundaries; (d) keep a united front by not contradicting or criticizing your spouse in the presence of the children; (e) make your marriage top priority, because the best thing for your children is for them to see a strong family where each member is valued.

Conclusion
God’s purpose for marriage is that it will last [Mark 10:6,8]. However, we know that the devil is unhappy with this unity created by God for the enjoyment of happiness, sexual expression, raising children, companionship, mutual care and provision. So we see that there are “little foxes” that come in to cause break up, pain, suffering and dissatisfaction among spouses. But if we are willing to take it to the Lord today, he will make it vibrate once more.

A Crown that will Last

The past two weeks have been the end of the football season in Europe, where the best clubs have battled among themselves for trophies, medals and cups. When they finally are called to receive their trophies they suddenly forget all the stress they have put in reaching this finals. Some who may even have incured severre injuries jump into the pitch to share the joy with their compatroits. And loosers, some get fired from their clubs and have to seek other means for survival.

The apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 calls on christisns to run the christian race with a clear sense of purpose, knowing that the crown we shall receive will last, v 25. If you are running for a prize that will last, you need to put on the full strength that you can possibly afford. Ours is a race where many have gone before us (Hebrews 12:1-3). They are there to cheer us up to urge us to do more as we compete for a crown that will surely last.

Where are you in this race for a crown that will last?

Freedom from Spiritual Enslavement

Introduction
Everybody wants to be free. No one wants to remain under the hegemony of another, no matter what benefits he/she may receive from that person. Even young children want to be independent of their parents at a very early age. The youth look forward to the age of puberty when they gain independence from their parents. In some parts of Africa, the events that mark the attainment of puberty are so elaborate and involves the entire community, and can last for days or even weeks.

The French socio-political philosopher, Jean-Jacques Rousseau once said, “Man was born free, but everywhere he is in chains. This man believes that he is the master of others, and still he is more of a slave than they are. How did that transformation take place? I don’t know.” Even though Rousseau was a respected philosopher in Western thought, yet his obsession with human slavery serves to point us to one to the basis for true personal freedom.

This year, the world is celebrating the bicentenary of the end of the slave trade. The trans-Atlantic slave trade itself is one of the worst crimes committed against humanity, especially the black race. There were many who profited in this trade, as they treated Africans like goods with insurance value added to them. Today however, when the name John Newton is mentioned we think of only the hymn writer, and not often the slave trader. He profited immensely from this trade, but could not help prevent himself from thinking about the grace of God upon his life, and his continued subjecting people into slavery. After his conversion, which occurred while on the high seas, Newton wrote one of the most beautiful hymns of all times “Amazing Grace.”

What we have today is not human slavery, but spiritual slavery. We need to be freed from spiritual enslavement, because unlike human slavery that denies one human dignity, this form of slavery blinds people and takes them to hell. This is because Ephesians 6:12 tells us “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers of this dark age…”

In John 8: 31-47 we meet Jesus talking with the Jews, challenging them that even though they claim to be descendants of Abraham, yet they are not really free. They are spiritual slaves. Like the Jews to whom Jesus said “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free” [John 8:32] we too need to be free from spiritual slavery. Because we do not fully know the extent to which Christ’s death on the cross has set us free, that is why we continue to remain under spiritual bondage. As we follow this story from John’s gospel, we see the following as ways by which we shall be set free from spiritual slavery.

1. Freedom from failures of the past vv 31-33 Exo 14:10-18
Jesus began by stressing that if they hold on to his teaching they are truly his disciples. They will know the truth and the truth will set them free. However they objected that they have never been slaves to any body. Certainly, this is an overstatement, because in exodus 14:10-18, we see that by God’s divine providence they were free from slavery in Egypt. So Jesus was bold to say even though they were children of Abraham, they have had terrible failures in the past for not doing the following things:
· They did not hold to the teaching of Abraham v 39
· They did not demonstrate faith in the Lord Rom 4:3 “Abraham believed and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
· They did not love the Lord as God the son v 42
Most of us today as Christians claim to be believers, but we have had serious failures in the past. We sing the song “Abraham’s blessings are mine, I am blessed in the morning and blessed in the evening, Abraham’s blessings are mine.” Yet, like Israel we too
· We have failed to obey the commands of the Lord (John 15:10, 14);
· We have failed to have faith in him (Heb 11:6);
· We have failed to love him and see him for who he is (John 9:39)

2. Freedom from the fact of sin vv 34-36
The Jews also had to deal with the problem of sin in their lives in order to be free from their spiritual enslavement. Jesus said in verse 34 “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.” Because their true father is the devil, all they are capable of doing is sin, vv 44-45. While they, like us may protest, yet James 2:8-11 says that if we break one of the commandments we are guilty of breaking all. The hold of sin in the life of the believer has the following effects:
· Sin can become a controlling factor in life
· Sin can become a dominating factor in life
· Sin can dictate our actions
But Jesus has come to give us the freedom we need to deal with our spiritual slavery, after having received the freedom he gives us. He can free you from this slavery that keeps you from becoming the person God created you to be, if only you turn to him today. We need to submit to God James 4:7

3. Freedom from the fears of the future
Israel in the time of Christ did not have certainty of the future, but of the past. Living under Roman occupation, they lack any hope that they will have a decent future free from slavery. This is why when they were saved from Egypt they were strictly warned not to go that way again [Deuteronomy 17:16]. They did not look for the coming of Christ, but look back to Abraham. The believer’s freedom from the slavery of sin gives us assurance of who we are in Christ (2 Cor 5;17). Our fears of the future are dealt with because:
· Those who know the truth are set free v 32
· This freedom is experienced both in the present and future v 36
· This freedom gives us a solid hope for the future that we will see Jesus when he comes 1 John 3:2-3
· No other religion or philosophy gives this hope, except Christianity. We know Jesus who holds the future; therefore, we are assured of his presence in all our endeavors.

Conclusion
As we prepare ourselves to receive communion today, I call on you to take steps to accept this freedom today. Jesus is offering to you a very personal invitation. He is saying to you “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” [Matthew 11:28] If you take up this invitation and allow him to come to your life, he will transform you and give you true freedom. Most people are looking for freedom from spiritual slavery. Sadly, they do so using the wrong means. I present to you Jesus, because “if the Son shall set you free, you will be free indeed…”[John 8:36].

Praise Evening: What better way to celebrate Independence?

On Friday 27th April 2007, my country Sierra Leone celebrated her 46th Independence Anniversary from Great Britain. As a nation, this is supposed to mark a mementuous event in the life of every Sierra Leonean, whereever s/he may be.

However, after 11 years of rebel war and years of corruption by our political leaders, Sierra Leone continues to be classified as one of the least developed countries in the world. Life expectancy is terribly low; killer diseases are common among children and women; unemployment is high.

Ironically, Sierra Leone is rich in natural resources like diamond and gold, and the land is fertile for agriculture. Yet we are still clasified as the poorest nation on earth. This is painful, especially for our children who grow up in this nation without any sense of a decent future.

So when Independence Day Celebration came this year, I was far away from home. However, the church with which I am fellowshiping in Leuven Belgium - Christ Centered Church- organized a "Praise & Worship Evening." As I joined brothers and sisters from many nations to sing the praise of our Lord, I also spent moments in thanking God for my country Sierra Leone.

Eventhough things may not be as developed today as we would like them to be, yet I believe God has called me to serve in this nation, through pastoral and teaching ministry.

Please pray for the up-coming Presidential and Paliamentary elections that will take place on 28th July 2007. Pray that the Lord will lead people to chose leaders who will be honest and seek the good of the nation. Pray also for a free and fair election process, devoid of violence and intimediation of opposition parties. Pray that the church will reamin strong and united in prayer for this land, and that Jesus will be Lord is every corner of our Sierra Leone.

Running the Christian Race (1 Cor 9:24-27)

Stephen Akwakwa (pictured second), a Ghanian ThM student at ETF was preaching today at Christ Centered Church in Leuven on the theme "Running the christian race" Taken from 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Stephen argued that in running the christian race, the believer has to realize that there are centain issues involved: [1] there is an event [2] there are rules [3] there is a judge, and [4] there is a reward to be won.

Using this as a basis, Stephen argued that christians must see themselves as involved in running a race which requires us to run with purpose and fight with confidence this race.

The Three Offices of Christ (Luke 4:14-30; Isaiah 61:1-3)

Ihad the opportunity to preach at Christ Centered Church in Leuven Belgium. below is a copy of the sermon. I trust that the Lord will bless your heart as you read through.

Introduction

The end of the events of Passion Week, which we celebrated last Sunday with the resurrection of Jesus, signals the end of another epoch in the Christian calendar. Now the church is preparing again for the feast of weeks (which comes fifty days after Passover) that ushers in the day of Pentecost. Some also celebrate the ascension of Christ, but always as preparatory for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, which sends the church to proclaim the message of salvation in Christ. Unfortunately, some people follow these events without really bringing to mind what they mean for us, and our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
I think therefore, the events of the Christian calendar are meant to call us back to reflect on the values of our faith. Our faith is rooted on the resurrected Lord Jesus. A better way I believe the church must look at this Rock of our faith is to look at the Three offices of Christ. In his life, ministry death and resurrection, Jesus has shown that he is the Prophet, Priest and King.
In Luke 4:14-30, we find a very interesting story of Jesus returning to his home region of Galilee, where we are told that news about his arrival soon spread. He went there moved by the power of the spirit (Luke 4:14). Like is his usual method he taught in the synagogue and every one was amazed and praised him v. 15. However, it was now time for him to visit his very hometown of Nazareth, where as the customs of the Jews permitted any visiting Rabbi was asked to read from the Jewish scriptures and teach in the synagogue. What transpired in this teaching session shows us, as well as them the three offices of Christ.

1. Christ our Prophet, vv 18-19
Given the opportunity to teach in the synagogue of his hometown, Jesus read from Isaiah 61:1-3. The Bible states that when he has read from the scroll and folded it away, the eyes of every one was fastened on him v 20. This particular portion of scripture he read shows his prophetic office among his people. Confirming that the spirit of the Lord is upon Him, he made it clear that his prophetic ministry was to proclaim:
- Good news to the poor
- Freedom for captive prisoners
- Recovery of sight to the blind
- Release from oppression
- The year of jubilee when slaves are freed, debts are cancelled and properties returned to their rightful owners (Lev 25)
Like Jesus, we are assured that in the last days God will pour out his spirit on all flesh (Joel 2:28-32). Today the Spirit promised by Christ has been poured out on all flesh, so that we can exercise our prophetic role by:
- Calling people back to God
- Proclaiming release from oppression
- Proclaim the year of his favor
- Are we doing that?

2. Christ our Priest, v 21
Our Luke passage goes on to tell us that Jesus responded to the intent gaze of people in the synagogue by saying that “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” v 21. Jesus proclaims himself as one who would bring the Good News of this scripture to pass but in a way that people would not yet be able to grasp. Jesus demonstrated His priestly office by:
- His sacrificial death on the cross Rom 5:6-8. He died on our behalf; in our weakness and frailty he paid the penalty for our sins. He offered himself as the pure Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29)
- His triumphal resurrection from the grave confirms the acceptability of his sacrifice Luke 24:5-8
- He is presently interceding in heaven at the father right hand on our behalf Hebrews 8:1-2
By participating in the new creation offered by Christ, believers have been made to participate in the priesthood of all believers (1 Peter 2:9). In this new status we are urged to offer our lives as living sacrifices to God (Rom 12:1-2), where we also function as priests by:
- Praying for each other 1 Thess 5:17
- Building each other up in the faith (1 Thess 5:11) and in the fellowship of believers (Hebrews 10:25)
- Unfortunately, there is too much of tearing down in the church today (James 4:11-12). The church needs to repent and ask our High priest to cleans us once again by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

3. Christ our King, vv 23-30
Having confirmed the fulfillment of this scripture before their eyes, Jesus was now drawn to answer their question “Physician heal thyself” Using two examples from Elijah and Elisha, Jesus underscores the point that a prophet has no regard in his home town. Even though his kingship may not be recognized in his very hometown, yet we know that:
- His kingship is from the royal house of David (Acts 3:25-28)
- His kingdom is spiritual in nature (Acts 1:6)
- He will come again as he promised (Acts 1:10-11), to be our judge
The believer today is the child of the King. This status means that we have a
- Different nationality (Phi 3:20)
- Choice to make, accept or reject (Rom 10:9-10)
- Appear before his judgment seat at the end of the age (Hebrews 9:27)

The Lord Jesus is Prophet, Priest and King. How are related with Him today?

Let us pray,
Thank you Lord that you are our Prophet, Priest and King. We open our hearts that you may speak prophetically to us today. We lay our lives at the fountain of your blood that flows from Calvary to be cleansed by your priestly sacrifice. We submit to your kingship. We give ourselves over to you and ask that you to be our Lord, Amen.

The Meaning of His resurrection (Matt 28:1-10)

On Sunday April 8, 2007 I was preaching at Word Communication Ministry in Brussels on the meaning of Jesus' resurrection for the church today. Below is a copy of the sermon.

As you read my prayer is that the resurrected Lord will rekindle your spiritual life so that you can make exploits for Him in this broken world.

Throughout Christian history the fact of Jesus’ resurrection has been the subject of heated debates. This debate is not new, yet as people continue to deny its validity, the church continues to grow by the power of the spirit. Our Lord is raised and this is the power we proclaim today. There is meaning in the resurrection of Jesus our Lord. It is key to the essence of the Christian faith.

1. The Resurrection of Jesus is a message of hope
We followed the story of Passion Week with Jesus entry into Jerusalem, through a week in which he received betrayal, rejection, an unfair trial and death on the cross for our sins. Even when he died, there was a wide satisfaction in the minds of religious leaders that they have got rid of an imposture. They placed guards in the tomb, for fear his disciples would steal his body and claim he has risen. How false they were? Yet on resurrection morning, the angel spoke to the women:
- Don’t be afraid, because the reality of resurrection brings joy, not fear v5
- He promised and now he had delivered, he has conquered death
- We can proclaim this fact with certainty and hope

2. The resurrection is a message of Jesus’ rulership over all creation
Even though he was kept in a tomb under the strict guidance of armed guards, yet he triumphed over death. He no longer lives among the dead; he has been raised v 6. This facts shows us that he is ruler of God’s eternal kingdom. He is not a false prophet or imposture, He is the ruler of all the earth. Phi 2:5-11

3. The message of the resurrection is a confirmation of ours
Because he is raised we are sure that we too shall be raised. In 1 Cor 15:12-16 Paul clearly proclaims that because Jesus was raised from the dead, we too are assured of our own resurrection. He gives the following reasons:
- if the dead are not raised, then Christ too is not
- our preaching is useless
- your faith is hopeless
- we are false witnesses
On the contrary, the angel invited the women to see for themselves the empty tomb; v 6 and even the religious leaders bribed the guards to tell a lie that his body was stolen vv 11-15.

4. The message of the resurrection needs to be proclaimed today
In a world of physical and moral death, in a world of terrorism, people need to hear the message of Jesus’ resurrection. The women were commanded to go and tell his disciples that he is risen v 7. Through out the Christian centuries the church has proclaimed his resurrection by:
- the empty tomb
- the resurrection appearances of Jesus
- our weekly meeting on Sunday
- our taking the Lord supper
- our witness to the salvific message of Christ

The church has a message for the world today. That message we bear each new day, that Christ is risen and we've got to proclaim it Phi 3:10-11

"Though your sins..... they shall be as white as snow...."

Back home in Sierra Leone, pastors often use the passage of scripture from Isaiah 1:18 where Yahweh spoke through the prophet saying "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow...." Very rarely do we as a church think what snow is like, we just have a kind of vague feeling of what snow is really like.

On the 7th and 8th February 2007, we had real snow on our campus at the Heverlee district of Leuven. As the snow began to fall, I cannot get myself from thinking of the many sermons preached back in Sierra Leone on how Jesus will make our lives as white as snow.

Snow is really special. I feels very different, because eventhough it is at freezing point, yet the sparkles of the snow are so unique.

How I long that the Lord will do what he says he will do in your life. The words "...though your sins are like sacrlet, they shall be as white as snow...." are so true, if only you will give your life over to Jesus. He says whoever comes to him, he will not cast away. Take this opportunity to comit your life to him.

The Power of Words

Friends, I have been thinking recently of the power of words - spoken, written and unspoken- and what they can achieve in the human family.

Paul in Colossians 3:17 urges believers every where to "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God."

Friends, this verse is rich with paradigm of how to make use of the power of words. Believers are to allow the word of Christ:

1. Dwell through our teaching and admonishing each other in the faith

2. Dwell through our singing of pslams, hymns and spiritual songs

3. Dwell through our exprressing of gratitude and thanks to the Lord Jesus

My prayer is that the Lord will make your words powerful to save the lost.

Blood Diamond - What benefit will Sierra Leone have?

"Blood Diamond" set in the context of Sierra Leone's gruesome rebel war in the 1990s expresses the true state of the shaddy schemes adopted by the global diamond industry. Nations that are blessed with these precious stones continue to witness unending circles of armed conflict, poverty and death. This circle is fulled by guns purchased from proceeds of blood diamonds that keep the wheels of blood and violence spinning endlessly.

Certainly, while I dont think that "God has left this land ever since" the activities of corrupt politicians who collaborate with this global cartel have not been highlighted enough for the world to see.

Though so many may have now know that it is really blood that adore their fingers, wrisks and necks, yet Hollywood has used my country to strategically bolster their economic edge over my land.

Our diamonds have been taken away, and so too is our story. This is "cinemisation" a form of postmodern colonialism.

Prepare the Way for The Lord

On Sunday december 10, 2006, I had the opportunity to preach in a Camaroonian led Church in Brussels on the theme "Preparing the Way for the Lord" taken from Isaiah 40:1-5. As we celebrate christmas, there are lots of preparations people make - for families, children, wives, friends and relations. Yet, most often than not, they hardly spend time to prepare for the coming of the Lord.

So, I think that this christmas God wants us to prepare the way of the Lord by doing certain things:

(a) Listening to His voice - His vioce gives us a sense of direction, that was why Isaiah spoke a word of comfort from the Lord v 1

(b) Remove all obstacles that would prevent you not welcoming Him - these may be deserts, wilderness, mountains or rugged places vv 2-4. Probably there is hatred or marlice in our hearts we need to deal with them as we prepare for the Lord (Gal 5:16, 19-21)

(c) Let His glory shine in you - Isaiah says that the glory of the Lord will shine for all the nations and we are being used to make this real to a world in need of the savior v 5.

I urge you this day to prepare the way of the Lord, because He is coming!

Women in the Jesus story

As we continue to follow the story of the birth of Christ, we are amazed with the role of women. The news was announced to Mary, a virgin by an angel. She shared it with Elizabeth, who was also expecting a baby. When the time came for the baby to be dedicated a prophetess was also there to see God's salvation.

We have opportunity this time to share the love of Christ with our loved ones, especially our sisters, wives, mothers and aunts.

A Bridge

The next four sundays we are celebrating what is known in the christian calendar as advent season. This means that we look forward to the coming birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, as well as anticipate his secoming coming in glory.

Really, Jesus' coming has bridged the gap between God and man because of sin. Due to our sins, Jesus had to die so that we might be saved. That indeed is love (Rom 5:8). Like this bridge which I cross every day to go to work in Sierra Leone, Jesus is our bridge to God. Are you on the right bridge?

Many people are today travelling on several bridges that they think will lead them to find true peace and satisfaction. Yet, they have not found that. I offer to you Jesus. He is the name by whom we will be saved (Acts 4:12). If you trust Him today, you like many others will be on the right bridge to God.

Assurance is needed in every body's life, especially when the truments of life continue to pile. However, Jesus assurs us that He will supply all our needs according to his riches in glory Philippians 4:19. He is able to do more that we can imagine, because he is our God.

The Gospel and Culture: the case of polygamy.

The Church on missions is confronted with the problem of how to relate the Gospel to culture. This is not usually easy, as answers have to be both biblical and contextual at the same time. The issue of polygamy in the African Evangelical Church is a serious consideration for any thoughful pastor involved in ministry. Questions like: "can we baptise polygamists? are they qualified to receive the eucharist? are they to divorce all their wives, except the first?" are often raised and they require answers. What can we do, given that the OT precident showed that God did condone the practice among the patriarchs? Augustine, Aquinas and Luther are reported to have said that this practice is 'ethically neutral.' On the other hand, what about the cycle of poverty, forced marriages, sexually transmitted diseases or even HIV/AIDS, and other forms of violence? How do we reconcile these dificulties, and offer authentic christian ministry?
